The Kindly Killer

Nilsen was born in Fraserburgh, Scotland, in November 1945. His childhood, he said, was lonely. He did not feel loved. It was only in 1978 that he invited a young man to his London apartment. They had sex, slept together and when the murderer woke up the next day, he knew that in a few minutes his improvised lover would be gone. That was why he killed him and thus began the chain of wicked crimes.

The killer seduced most of his victims in a well-known London bar called Black Cap. A large number of gays gathered there and the predator knew it.

Look Better

The former British Army member told police that he made his murdered lovers look "better" after they died. It is that Nilsen was in charge -before dismembering them- of cleaning their bodies and paying tribute to them. The man could be proven about 12 murders. They had all been his lovers. Most of them were young, but he even killed teenagers.

At first, he sanitized and dressed the bodies over and over again. For several months he repeated the macabre routine. Finally, he dismembered them. And he buried them in his private cemetery. He even acknowledged to the authorities that he had sex with some of the corpses.

Mistake

But after several years, he made a mistake. Some parts of the bodies that he dismembered decided to flush them down the toilet. They weren't very big, but they were big enough for them to continue their decomposition, stuck in the plumbing of the building in which he lived. Neighbors, disgusted by the smell that wafted everywhere, decided to call plumbers. Upon reviewing everything, they discovered the human remains. The police investigated but were quick to find Nilsen, who immediately confessed.

When investigators arrived, the "butcher" told them:

"There are more bodies out there." During a speech on the CBS program Voice of a serial killer, Nilsen commented: "Towards the end, there were two or three bodies under the sheds. They started to pile up."

"When summer came, the heat was a problem because of the smell. So I knew I had to deal with that problem. So I thought about what was causing the pain. And I concluded that it was the guts, the soft parts of bodies, organs, things like that, "he described.

Arrested

He was arrested on February 9, 1983. Nilsen was convicted of six deaths: Stephen Holmes (14 years old, his first victim), Kenneth Ockenden, Martyn Duffey, William Sutherland, and Malcolm Barlow. But it was known that other never-identified victims passed through his bed and his butcher cleaver, which he still kept.
