Cornard Roy

Conrad Roy was born in 1995 in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. Sometimes he was socially anxious about going to school and going to class. For 3/4 years he worked with his father, grandfather, and uncle in his family's marine salvage business, Tucker-Roy Marine Towing and Salvage, Inc, in the New England area. In the spring of 2014, he obtained his captain's license from the Northeast Maritime Institute by completing three months of evening classes and in June 2014 he graduated on the Honor Roll (highest marks) of the Old Rochester Regional High School (ORR) in Mattapoisett. He was a versatile high school athlete who played baseball, rowed crew, and ran track. He got a 3.88 GPA and was accepted to Fitchburg State University to study business, but at that point, he decided not to go.

Michhele Carter

Michhele Carter was born on August 11, 1996, in Massachusetts to Gail and David Carter. She attended King Philip Regional High School, Wrentham. She had developed an eating disorder at age 8 or 9, may have had a cut injury, was on prescribed psychiatric medication at 14.

Carter and Conrad Roy met in Florida in 2012 while each was visiting relatives. After this first meeting, they only saw each other in person a few times over the course of two years, although they lived about 35 miles from each other in the suburbs of Boston. From this, They exchanged SMS. While most of the media regularly referred to Carter as Roy's girlfriend, this was a description used by Carter, not Roy. He considered her a friend.

Beaten

According to court documents, Roy was allegedly physically beaten by his father and verbally assaulted by his grandfather, and attempted suicide in October 2012 when he was discouraged after his parents' divorce. After learning that he was planning to kill himself, Carter repeatedly discouraged him from attempting suicide in 2012 and encouraged him to "get professional help". However, her attitude changed in July 2014, when she began to think it would be "a good thing to help him die". In June, Roy had texted Carter suggesting they were acting like Romeo and Juliet, verifying that she understood that they had each killed each other.

Roy struggled with social anxiety and depression for which he had seen several therapists and counselors, including a cognitive behavioral therapist in the weeks prior to his death.

Suicide

On Sunday, July 13, 2014, following digital exchanges with Carter, while interacting with his family, Roy committed suicide by poisoning himself with carbon monoxide fumes in his truck in a Kmart parking lot in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.
