This world is full of strange events. We live on a planet that has countless secrets and it is very difficult to judge the people here. There are such heinous crimes that humanity loses trust. Finding out the reasons for these crimes is a difficult task. Today we have a review of a crime whose causes have divided Russian society into two parts.

 The Khachuturyan case:

This is a disturbing incident of three teenage sisters stabbing their dad to end, while he was sleeping in his armchair at the family residence in northern Moscow.

Attack

The sisters assaulted him with a knife, hammer, and pepper spray, causing fatal injuries to his skull, neck, and chest. He had 30 knife wounds on his body when he was discovered. The girls then phoned the police and were arrested at the scene.

Why  did the sisters murders their father?

What was the motive?

Why did the sisters murder their father? What was the motive?

It was during the sunset of 27 July 2018, Mikhail Khachaturyan, 57, called Kristina, Angelina and Maria, (aged 19, 18, and 17 respectively), one by one to his room. He chided them for not cleaning the flat appropriately and sprayed pepper gas in their faces. The sisters planned against the father after this happening took place.

investigation

The inquiry soon revealed a widespread history of violence in the family. Khachaturyan had regularly beaten his daughters over three years, torturing them, keeping them as captives, and sexually abusing them. They reported the assault to police and confessed carrying it out, telling they understood their lives were in danger if they did not take action.

The case shortly became dramatic news in Russia. Human freedoms activists claimed that the sisters were not sinners but victims, as they had no means of getting help and safety from their cruel father. However, there are no laws ensuring victims of domestic violence in Russia.

Law

Under allowable changes submitted in 2017, a first-time culprit who beats a family member, but not painful enough to put them in hospital, will face only a fine or up to two weeks in supervision. Authority in Russia usually reacts to domestic abuse as a "family issue", giving little or no help at all.

The sisters' mother, who had also suffered beatings and abuse from Khachaturyan in the past, had contacted the police years before. So did the family's acquaintances, who were highly worried about him. But there is no indication that the police reacted on any of these appeals for support. According to psychiatric examinations, the girls lived in a father's prison and had been hurting from post-traumatic stress (PTSD).

Charge

During the inquiry, the sisters were all charged with planned killing. Angelina and Kristina face up to 20 years in jail. Maria, a child at the time, could be jailed for up to 10 years.

The judgment to bring murder charges has been met with objections. In Moscow, numbers of people gathered outside the department of the Investigative Committee law enforcement agency. Activists were proceeding to picket their headquarters almost daily. Presentations have also taken place at Russian embassies or consulates around the planet, and Russian cultural figures have spoken out in defense of the sister

reaction

The high-profile case has split the Russian nation into those who say that Kristina, Angelina, and Maria Khachaturyan acted in self-defense and those who judge them as killers. Free voting suggested that 41% of Russian respondents support the Khachaturyan sisters, while 29% don’t support them.
