On July 11, 1990, 23-year-old Scottish-Australian woman Sarah MacDiarmid vanished while walking through the Kananook railway station car park. She had been playing tennis with her friends at Flinders Park in Batman Avenue before catching the train home. Sarah's friends got off at Bonbeach, while she continued to Kanakook where her car was parked. Sarah was last seen walking towards her car in the mistakenly lit car park at 10:20 pm that day.

Sarah's parents reported her missing the next day. Upon inquiry, police found bloodstains next to her car and drag marks leading to the bushes, as well as Sarah's cigarette lighter on the ground. Witnesses reported hearing a woman yelling "Give me back my keys!" on the night Sarah went missing. Police spent 21 days searching for her but found nothing.

In 2014, it was claimed that detectives considered Australian serial killer Bandali Debs to be a suspect in the case. Bandali had killed Donna Anne Hicks in 1995, teenager Kristy Harty in 1997, and two Victoria Police officers in 1998. He is now serving four consecutive terms of life custody. Police haven't made any further comments about the case as it is still active.

Paul Denyer is also a person of interest but he has rejected any involvement in Sarah's disappearance. Paul killed three women during seven weeks in 1993. All of the victims were killed in the suburb of Frankston where Sarah lived.
