According to police,in September 2019, a 15-year-old boy was killed while attempting to protect his 5-year-old sister during a break-in at their home in Port Charlotte, Fla., last week. Relatives and neighbours hailed the boy, Khyler Edman, as a hero.

According to the sheriff, police received reports of burglaries and numerous calls about a suspicious person who appeared to have been stabbed around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. When they arrived, the injured person attempted to flee, but was apprehended 15 minutes later. According to the police, he was identified as a burglar by a local resident.

When Ryan Clayton Cole, 27, was apprehended, he had stab wounds on his hands and side, according to the sheriff. Mr. Cole and Khyler were allegedly involved in a violent altercation inside Khyler's home, and Khyler died as a result of his injuries, according to the police.

Following Mr. Cole's arrest, police canvassed the neighbourhood and discovered signs of forced entry at Khyler's home, according to the sheriff. His body was discovered inside. The cause of death was not disclosed by the police.

"It appears that the suspect broke into this residence, and a violent encounter ensued," the sheriff said. "We believe that the teenager was trying to protect the home and their younger sibling."

His younger sister, who is five years old, was unharmed. Supporters set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral costs and the relocation of Khyler's mother and sister. The 5-year-old, who has not been publicly identified, had witnessed the altercation, according to one of the organisers.

Local news agencies claimed that Khyler's relatives, classmates, and acquaintances gathered for an emotional vigil on Sunday night.

"He became a man that day when he saved his sister," a former classmate told NBC2 News. "Not many people would do something like that."

Mr. Cole was known to police officers, had a history of drug usage, and was on probation, according to the sheriff. He has been arrested more than 20 times since 2011, according to booking records, and has done time for drug and theft offences.

The state is seeking the death sentence for Ryan Cole, who is accused of killing Khyler Edman.
