Burned As Baby, Woman Finally Meets Nurse Who Cared For Her

For countless years Amanda Scarpinati cherished her old black and white photo of a nurse lovingly caring for her as a baby.

The photo was taken in 1977 at a hospital in New York after Amanda suffered a horrific accident. Amanda, who was only 3 months old, fell from the sofa into a hot-steam humidifier and received third-degree-burns. In the photo, Amanda’s head is wrapped in gauze as the nurse cradles the her lovingly.

As she grew up, Amanda endured several operations and was subjected to bullying by her classmates because of her appearance. When she was having bad days, Amanda would pick up the black and white photo of the nurse. It always brought her comfort knowing that there was once a person who cared so much about her.

Amanda always held on to the hope that one day she would her guardian angel. For over 20 years she searched, and eventually decided to turn her attention to social media for one last attempt.

When Amanda Scarpinati was just 3 months old, she was rushed by ambulance to Albany Medical Center in New York suffering with third-degree burns.The year was 1977, and Amanda had accidentally fallen from the sofa straight into a hot-steam humidifier.

While she was in hospital she was cared for by one particular nurse. In black and white photos from that year, Amanda is being held lovingly in the nurses arms who can be seen tenderly smiling at the young patient.

Amanda recovered fully from the incident, but the injuries she sustained led to her being subjected to endless bullying in her childhood due to her appearance.

“Growing up as a child, disfigured by the burns, I was bullied and picked on, tormented,” Amanda tells news agency AP. “‘I’d look at those pictures and talk to her, even though I didn’t know who she was. I took comfort looking at this woman who seemed so sincere caring for me.”

Amanda has always had a longing that one day she would be able to find the very nurse that so lovingly cared for her after her horrific accident. Amanda spent over 20 years trying to find her with no results. Finally, she decided to take her search to social media, sharing the black and white photos on her Facebook page, writing: “I would love to know her name and possibly get a chance to talk to her and meet her. Please share, as you never know who it could reach.”

Spread like wildfire

It was not long before her post quickly caught peoples attention, and the very next day she received the message she had been waiting so long for. A woman named , Angela Leary, had worked at the hospital the same year and recognized her colleague Susan Berger. Susan was just 21 when the photo was taken and had just finished college. But she had never forgot the photo and the little girl with the burns she cared for at the hospital.

“I remember her. She was very peaceful,” Susan remembers. “Usually when babies come out of surgery they’re sleeping or crying. She was just so calm and trusting. It was amazing.”

Not long after, the pair had an emotional reunion after 38 years.

“I don’t know how many nurses would be lucky enough to have something like this happen, to have someone remember you all that time,” Susan says.

“I feel privileged to be the one to represent all the nurses who cared for Amanda over the years.”

I was very emotional when I read this incredible story, especially considering everything Amanda has been through. It is wonderful to see that she finally made contact with Susan and the pair were reunited.
