A 16-year-old in northern Indiana has been sentenced to 64 years in prison by a judge for the murder of a 6-year-old girl. Anthony Hutchens was tried as an adult for the crime, he committed at the age of 14. In January, St. Joseph Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Sanford convicted him of murder and child molestation after a bench trial.

Hutchens received a sentence of 55 years for murder and 9 years for the child molestation charge from Judge Sanford, with the two terms to be served consecutively. Hutchens has already spent 748 days in detention. He will be obligated to register as a sex offender after his release.

Grace Ross, a 6-year-old girl from New Carlisle, was discovered deceased in a nearby wooded area in March 2021. Following an investigation, authorities revealed that the child had been strangled, physically assaulted, and sexually abused.

She was reported missing for about two hours before her body was located. Initially, Anthony Hutchens was not identified as a suspect due to being a minor, but investigators focused on him early in the investigation.

Judge Sanford ruled that Hutchens must remain in a juvenile detention center until he reaches somewhere between the ages of 18 and 21. The South Bend Tribune reported that at that point, his case and sentence will be reviewed.

Anthony Hutchens was 14 years old when he killed Grace. Despite his age, he was tried and sentenced as an adult. Following his conviction, Hutchens' attorney announced plans to appeal the verdict, arguing that the case should have been handled in juvenile court.
