Neal Falls, Serial Killer, May Be?

“Live or die?”

That was the question a man with a gun asked a sex worker before he assaulted her at her home in Charleston, West Virginia on July 18, 2015. In the ensuing chaos, the man set the gun down to get more control over the victim. The victim snatched the gun and fired behind her attacking the attacker who fell dead. As dark as things already were, things soon turned darker when police began looking into the man's car and his history.

The man was recognized as Neal Falls from Springfield, Oregon. He had answered an ad on Backpage.com and attacked the escort when she answered the door. On his body, Falls had four pairs of handcuffs and a post-it found in his pocket that included a list of six women, their ages, and phone numbers, which police believe could have been future victims. The women listed were still living. In his vehicle, police found axes, bleach, bulletproof vests, knives, a machete, plastic trash bags, a sledgehammer, and a shovel. He also had a rubber tub big enough to fit a body in his vehicle.

Since being doubted of being a serial killer, detectives began piecing together a timeline of Falls’ movements to connect him to other unsolved killings. He is being interrogated for unsolved murders in New York, California, Oregon, Texas, Ohio, Kuty, Illinois, and Nevada, and even during a time when he worked as a security guard at the Hoover Dam. Many of the unsolved murders that may be linked to Falls were females who were escorts and promoted their services online. From 2000 to 2008, four women doubted of being prostitutes vanished in Las Vegas but three of them were found having been dismembered. Falls rented a room in Las Vegas during the same period. There was a spate of murders in Chillicothe, Ohio being interrogated as possible victims of Falls. Chillicothe, Ohio is less than two hours from Charleston, West Virginia. Falls had been interviewed by police in twenty states.

Data about Falls became fewer and farther between as time went on. He may have had a bogus Facebook page that had a profile picture depicting a Barbie doll standing over dismembered dolls covered in blood. The Facebook profile bore the name “BJ Ross”. One former roommate of Falls remembered that he had eight guns including an AR but didn’t find his gun collection unique since lots of people collect guns and he was a security guard. Just eleven days before he was murdered, Falls was stopped by police outside of Dallas, Texas. In the video seen here from the police officer’s body cam, you can see a brief glimpse of Falls’ face and can hear him talking about not having an address and that he was going to West Virginia. He was stopped for speeding 64 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone. He was given a ticket for overspeeding and sent on his way without searching his car containing his “kill kit” just a few feet away from the officer because there was no reasonable cause to search it.

It’s been just a little over three years since he was killed but there hasn’t been much data coming to light about Neal Falls and his criminal movements in recent months. If he was a serial killer, he has to hold some sort of record for operating as a serial killer and still having systematic interaction with police across vast regions of the US. His is a case that has thrilled me because he was murdered not very far from where I live and I’ve tried following his case but there just hasn’t been much information about him released. I cannot imagine a man driving across the country with this kill kit in his car, guns on his person, and four sets of handcuffs NOT being a serial killer. If he has four sets of handcuffs and nothing else, maybe he’s a control freak or sexual deviant.

If he has shovels, machetes, and sledgehammers only, maybe he is doing work as a landscaper. If he only has guns, maybe he is a gun lover and just looking to protect himself. If he has shovels, sledgehammers, guns, knives, axes, restraints, plastic trash bags, and a giant rubber tub while going out and assaulting sex workers, I think the logical judgment is he is a serial killer. I find it interesting that he set the gun down in the first place. The killings he is suspected of committing would make him one of the most prolific serial killers in the country and it took him getting killed during one of his attacks for police to finally begin to look at him as a probable serial killer. How many more victims might he have claimed undetected if he wasn’t killed? I truly think that the escort that murdered him has likely saved numerous lives.
