On February 3rd, 2019, a nine-year-old girl named Serenity Dennard went missing from a residential building for children near Rockerville, South Dakota. Serenity was playing in the gym of the facility when she ran from the facility, using another child as a distraction. Incapable to leave other children, the faculty member stayed behind and called for help, rather than chasing Serenity.

Disappearance Of Serenity Dennard

The weather was below freezing, and Serenity was wearing just a long-sleeve tee-shirt, jeans, and snow boots. After she vanished, below zero temperatures and heavy snow prevented many searches. The area around the center is heavily wooded, rocky, and is home to mountain lions.

Serenity was adopted in 2014, after two years in and out of foster homes after her biological parents went to prison. Her parents say she "had planned escapes by packing a suitcase and leaving in the middle of the night" many times before living at the Black Hills Children's Home.

Throughout the time, many Facebook groups discussing the case popped up. A former state lawmaker, Lynn DiSanto, became a frequent supporter of these groups, repeatedly questioning the search and rescue methods, timelines, and motivations for many of the key players. DiSanto made a "website and Facebook page with commentary, videos and other content attached about the case, and started a GoFundMe page in hopes of raising reward money." This lead to an online spat with someone which lead to a no-trespass order against the former lawmaker.

On May 1st, cadaver dogs picked up a scent but did not find Serenity.

The Children's Home Society has been under much public scrutiny after the disappearance. The head of the Children's Home Society is set to retire by the end of the year, declared at the end of April.

What occurred? Did someone pick her up in an unlikely crime of chance? Did someone plan with Serenity to meet up? Did she get lost and freeze?
