Last Sunday Retired Army man kills wife, mentally ill daughter:

The accused, Purshottam Singh Gandhok, lived with his wife Jasbir Kaur and daughter Kamaljeet Kaur in a rented flat on the ground floor of a three-storied building.

An 89-year-old retired Indian Army serviceman allegedly killed his 81-year-old wife and his 55-year-old mentally ill daughter at their rented home in Sher-e-Punjab Colony in Andheri (East) on Sunday night as he was fed up with their continued disease and was unable to take care of them.

Around 8.30 pm, he allegedly murdered his wife and daughter by slitting their throats with a knife.

Twelve hours later, around 8.40 am, he called one of his daughters who resides nearby and confessed to the crime. His 58-year-old daughter hurried to his house but found the door locked from the inside and the windows shut. She then called out for him.

Gandhok told her he will open the door only for the police. His daughter called the police control room and local police rushed to the spot. When the man opened the door, the police found both the women lying on different beds inside the bedroom.

According to police, when his daughter asked Gandhok why he did this, he replied, “I killed them as I could not see them in pain and I was unable to take care of them anymore.”

“He told his elder daughter his age did not permit him to take care of her mother and sister any longer and he was unable to see their pain,”

The police said Gandhok’s wife had angiography and for the last 10 years, she had been mostly bedridden. His daughter was mentally ill since childhood and was dependent on her parents.

A neighbor told TOI: “He would regularly step out to buy household items. His daughter would visit to check on her parents and sister.” Another said, “She never got a hint her father planned to take such a step as he was so caring.”

He used a kitchen knife to slit his wife and daughter's throats.

He also thought of ending his life too but changed his mind thinking who would inform his married daughter of the deaths.

Gandhok was produced before the Andheri court on Tuesday and remanded to judicial custody. Police have recovered the kitchen knife used in the killings.
