What happened to Cannon Hinnant was terrible. Horrific, Disgusting. Completely and uncalled for. That baby did not deserve what happened to him, and I hope the evil man who did it is buried under the jail and nothing short of truly terrible things come his way

Cannon Hinnant was five years old child.

On Sunday afternoon, he was murdered while riding his bike.

Cannon and his big sisters (ages seven and eight) were riding bikes when Cannon crossed into his neighbor’s yard.

The neighbor, 25-year-old Darius Sessoms- who had eaten dinner at Cannon’s house on Friday and come over to visit with Cannon’s dad earlier that afternoon- walked outside and shot the child in the head.

His big sisters watched the execution.

Neighbor Doris Labrant said that Sessoms “ran out of his house, pointed the gun at the boy’s head, fired, then ran back inside.”

“My first reaction was he’s playing with the kids,” Labrant recalled. “For a second, I thought, ‘That couldn’t happen.’ People don’t run across the street and kill kids.”

No details about a possible motive for the shooting have been released, but police said the shooting wasn't random.

Doris Labrant, another neighbor, who witnessed the shooting, said Sessoms ran up to Cannon, put the gun near his head, and fired before running back to his own house.

Officers and Wilson County EMS medics arrived shortly after and tried to save his life, but Cannon died at Wilson Medical Center from a gunshot wound to the head.

Meanwhile, Sessoms fled the scene and was arrested in nearby Goldsboro, NC Monday afternoon and charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond.

Sessoms has a criminal history, including many felony drug convictions beginning in 2016, two felony parole violations, and charges for possessing stolen firearms and resisting a public official.

On September 22, 2020, Sessom's girlfriend was also arrested in connection with the case. She was charged with felony accessory after the fact.

Darius Sessoms, 25, was arrested within days of the August 2020 shooting. He’s been in jail awaiting trial since that time.

A grand jury formally indicted Sessoms on Dec. 22. He is due to appear in court on Jan. 26, according to court records in Wilson County.

Cannon Hinnant's mother said.

"I pray he gets the death penalty. We will fight for that till the end. That’s what we’re hoping for," said Bonny Parker,

Update...

Sessoms was appointed a second attorney for his capital case and has his next court appearance on April 10.
