Zephany Nurse

Zephany Nurse was abducted from a hospital in Cape Town three days after her birth in April 1997.

Her parents, Morné and Celeste Nurse, had three more children. never gave up hope of seeing their firstborn again and celebrated her next 17 birthdays without her.

Then 17 years later their daughter Cassidy came home from high school with some remarkable news: there was a girl at school that resembled her.

"I wanted to get to know this girl," said Morne.

He also managed to take photographs of the girl.

"That's when we saw the photo of her and I burst out," said Celeste. "I got this feeling inside, I just grabbed my heart and said this is my daughter. This is my daughter!"

The police were brought in and a nail-biting six-week wait began during which DNA tests were taken. Then a detective phoned and told Celeste, "you are a mother again."

Celeste - overwhelmed by emotions - could hardly believe it. It turned out Zephany had been living just a few miles away.

"I burst out into tears when I saw her," said Celeste. "I couldn't stop crying. I couldn't stop crying. I said,' finally I found you, for 17 years I have been looking for you. I found you finally, you're mine again.'"

And this young mother who always believed she'd find her daughter is now prepared to forgive.

"When I see the woman that took her, I want to give her a hug," said Celeste. "When I see her I want to say thank you, you've done a good job, look at my daughter she's beautiful inside and out."

Zephany grew up just a couple of miles away with a different name and a different family, never suspecting she was not their real daughter. But last month her biological sister, Cassidy Nurse, began attending the same school, and soon fellow pupils noticed a startling resemblance between them.

Morné Nurse then saw Cassidy and Zephany eating burgers together in McDonald’s, and, struck by the physical similarities, contacted the police. DNA tests confirmed that she was the Nurses’ long-lost daughter.

The woman who stole Zephany was sentenced to 10 years in jail for kidnapping, fraud, and violating the Children's Act.

The kidnapper, Lavona Solomon

Recalling the moment she discovered her true identity, Zephany said: 'At the time when they presented to me that they were going to do the DNA test, no way in my normal, right mind, in my 17 years of age at that time, could I ever possibly think that this DNA test could be positive.

'Because life was so normal for me. It shook my entire world when the results came back. It was shocking.'
