Who Murdered Elizabeth Bain

2022-08-12 23:07:03 Written by DoeNetwork

On June 19th, 1990, Elizabeth Bain told her mother that she was going to check the "tennis schedule" on campus - Elizabeth never came back and went missing without a cause or reason. Elizabeth did not have a record of running away or taking off and did not seem to be having any problems at school or otherwise.

On June 22nd, Elizabeth's car was found with a large blood stain on the back seat. Her body has never been found.

Robert Baltovich, a graduated student at the University of Toronto had begun a relationship with Elizabeth, earlier in the year.

There isn't much info on Robert, what he was like, or what he was like as a boyfriend.

The Trial of Robert Baltovich

On November 19, 1990, Baltovich was caught and charged with first-degree murder. His case continued in the courts for several years, during which he consistently defended his innocence. His lawyers suggested that the so-called "Scarborough rapist" (the term used for the then unidentified serial killer Paul Bernardo) might be responsible for the murder.

Jurors at Mr. Baltovich's first trial agreed with the Crown's theory that Mr. Baltovich, enraged at being dumped by Ms. Bain, killed her in a park, left the body overnight, and later moved it in her car to the Lake Scugog area east of the city.

The police and prosecution think Mr. Baltovich murdered Ms. Bain on June 19, 1990, in Colonel Danforth Park, a wooded area near the University of Toronto's Scarborough campus. They claimed he hide the body, and in the early morning hours of June 22, drove Ms. Bain's car about 45 minutes to Lake Scugog, disposed of the body, and returned to Toronto.

But a Toronto police document has surfaced that casts doubt on Mr. Baltovich's conviction and raises questions about why it was not previously turned over to his lawyers. Notes from a 1990 interview of two experts at the Centre of Forensic Sciences conducted by Detective Sergeant Brian Raybould suggest that the forensic proof was not consistent with Ms. Bain being killed, her body hidden, and then transported in her car more than two days later.

On March 31, 1992, Baltovich was convicted of second-degree murder. His lawyers appealed and on March 31, 2000, Baltovich was released on bail, pending the outcome of his appeal. In September 2004 his appeal was finally processed; once more his case gained national attention when his lawyers alleged that he had been wrongfully convicted and that Bernardo was guilty of Bain's murder. They pointed to circumstantial information indicating links to Bernardo, proof not available during Baltovich's original trial because Bernardo's identity as the "Scarborough rapist" was then unknown. Asked about the matter, Bernardo denied involvement in Bain's disappearance.

On March 31, 2008, jury selection began in the second-degree murder trial. The trial, slated to begin in Toronto on April 14, 2008, was delayed, with the Crown (prosecution) giving no reason. When the trial resumed, the Crown declined to call any of the more than 50 witnesses they had planned, citing "recent developments, including the cumulative effect of the pre-trial evidentiary rulings rendered to date in this case, other evidentiary issues, and changes to case law". With no Crown case, the judge directed the jury to make a finding of not guilty on April 22, 2008.

Final Notes

Other incidents and things of the like have occurred, ch anyone is welcome to look into but I'm just trying to keep all the main incidences that have been reported and what they were ultimately convicted for. Plus, the incidences might connect to Elizabeth Bain.

Derek Finkle's 1997 book No Claim to Mercy presented evidence tying Bernardo to the murder of Elizabeth Bain, who disappeared on June 19, 1990 (three weeks after the last known attack of the Scarborough Rapist). Bain told her mother that she was going to "check the tennis schedule" at the University of Toronto Scarborough; three days later, her car was found with a large bloodstain on the back seat.

Who do you think killed Elizabeth? Robert, Paul, or someone completely unrelated?
