Back in 1939, a girl named Lina Medina gave birth to a healthy baby boy. The only note-worthy detail in this was the girl's age: she was only five years old.

This story is truly a medical marvel -- one that is surely hard to believe.

Early Life and Pregnancy of Lina Medina

Lina Marcela Medina was born on 27 September 1933, in Ticrapo District, Peru. Her parents Tiburelo Medina and Victoria Losea had nine children including Lina. Her father was a silversmith and her mother was a housemaker.

When she was just five years old, Lina’s parents noticed Lina struggling with pain in her belly and abnormal swelling in her abdomen. They feared it was a tumor so they immediately took her to a hospital in Pisco. In the beginning, doctors thought the swelling was a tumor. But later, to everyone’s surprise, they discovered that she was seven months pregnant at that time.

The parents and doctors were so shocked that they consulted a specialist Dr. Gerardo Lozada, who confirmed the pregnancy. She was confirmed to be the youngest mother in the world at the age of 5 years 7 months and 21 days.

Lina gave birth to a 5-pound, 8-ounce boy via C-section. The child was named Gerardo Medina. With this delivery, she became the world’s youngest mother at the age of five.

Well, this case grabbed attention from around the world with even pediatricians getting astonished. However, Lina and her family never wanted this attention. Another interesting fact is that Lina has never disclosed the name of her child’s father to date.

About one in every 10,000 children develops a condition known as precocious puberty and Medina was one of those kids.

What is precocious puberty?

Puberty that begins before age 8 in girls and before age 9 in boys is considered precocious puberty.

Roughly ten times more girls than boys develop this way, and there is a reason to suspect that it might be accelerated by sexual contact at an early age. Puberty includes rapid growth of bones and muscles, changes in body shape and size, and development of the body's ability to reproduce.

The cause of precocious puberty often can't be found. Rarely, certain conditions, such as infections, hormone disorders, tumors, brain abnormalities, or injuries, may cause precocious puberty.

Who is the Father of Lina Medina’s Child?

Lina never shared any details regarding the father of her child with her doctors or the authorities. She even did not share what landed her pregnant. However, there is a possibility that she might not have known about her pregnancy and what happened to her as she was too young.

Even, Lina’s father was arrested by the police who suspected him of sexually assaulting his daughter. However, with no proper evidence or witness against him, Tiburelo was released and freed of the rape charges against his daughter. Even, Lina’s cousin was suspected of making her pregnant. But, again due to lack of evidence, the police could not hold him responsible for any charges.

No publicity

Throughout the years, many people have called her story a complete hoax, however, X-rays, photos, and doctors' documentation are proof that this did happen. The identity of the kid's father, however, was never determined.

Delivery was by cesarean section because her slim frame was still not adequate in terms of passing a full-sized child through the birth canal.

Many news organizations and newspapers offered large sums of money for the rights to interview and film the girl but were turned down.

Lina Marcela Medina de Jurado is still alive and well. She always refused to talk about her personal life. To respect the privacy of the Medina family, not much information is known about either Lina Medina or her family.
