On September 4, 1974, a group of 40 teenagers, including McKenzie, embarked on a 5-day youth camp organized by the "Young Australia League" in the mountains of Victoria, Australia. The location, near Victoria Falls and the Acheron River in Taggerty, was chosen for its scenic beauty and provided the perfect backdrop for outdoor activities like trekking. This was expected to be a straightforward and safe experience, as the camp was well-supervised with no prior incidents reported. However, things were about to take a drastic turn.

The hike was strenuous, but the group was closely supervised and everyone was within visual range of the others. Damien is said to have moved ahead of the others at one point, briefly disappearing from sight, but when the party came around the bend, he was nowhere to be found.

Despite extensive efforts by the camp supervisors, the boy was nowhere to be found. No response came from calling out to him, and it appeared as if he had vanished into thin air. Upon notification of the authorities, a massive search operation was initiated, involving over 300 individuals from various agencies such as the police, Search and Rescue Squad, Federation of Victorian Walking Clubs Search and Rescue Section, Forestry Commission of Victoria, Red Cross, and many local volunteers.

The search also involved the use of aircraft and tracking dogs to comb through the rugged wilderness. Despite these efforts, the search, which lasted for more than a week, was ultimately called off due to inclement weather without a single trace of Damian McKenzie being found. His fate remains a mystery to this day.

David Paulides mentions several peculiarities during the search operation. According to him, the tracking dogs were unable to pick up any scent of the boy. The dogs didn't lose the trail after detecting it, rather they couldn't find any scent to follow in the first place. This was an unusual occurrence, as the dogs were usually skilled at finding their target.

Another strange aspect, according to Paulides, is that the boy's tracks were found leading up one side of the waterfall and then abruptly stopping as if he had disappeared into thin air. While this is a mysterious clue, its authenticity is uncertain, as an investigation specialist named Valentine Smith stated.

“I have found that there have been several reports of child footprints found a considerable distance from where Damien was last seen. However, all of these messages are contradictory and do nothing. I also read the remarks of Investigator David Polids. He writes that the boy’s footsteps suddenly appear elsewhere and also suddenly have strange traces … “

The case of Damian McKenzie continues to spark curiosity and speculation. Despite the unclear validity of the disappearing footprints, the fact remains that neither Damian nor any evidence of his whereabouts have been found.

This has given rise to several theories about his fate. One of the possibilities is that he got lost in the dense bush. The region where the group was hiking was characterized by rolling hills and thick forests with heavy vegetation in certain areas, making it difficult to navigate.

The possibility of the search operation missing Damian even though he was close by was acknowledged by the search and rescue personnel. If he had fallen and become unconscious, succumbed to hypothermia due to the freezing temperatures, or was unable to call for help due to any other disability, the search team might not have found him. This highlights the difficulty of the search operation in such a challenging terrain.

How could he have wandered so far from the group in such a short amount of time and why didn't he respond when his name was called immediately after his disappearance? These questions remain unanswered to this day.

The Disappearance Of 10 Year Old Damian McKenzie

Another theory suggests that Damian may have taken a fatal fall down a steep incline and into the Steavenson River, where he could have drowned. However, the search team thoroughly examined the relatively shallow and slow-moving river and was confident that he was not there. Nevertheless, it's possible that they could have missed him during their search.

The fate of Damien McKenzie remains a mystery to this day. It is intriguing how he could disappear in a matter of minutes without a trace. While there are reports from David Paulides about vanished tracks and confused tracker dogs, their veracity is unclear. Did the boy get lost, kidnapped, killed by wild animals, or was he subjected to unknown forces? The truth about what happened to him has never been uncovered, and his case remains unsolved.
