On Monday night, a 43-year-old man shot and killed three people and injured five others at Michigan State University before taking his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot. The police, who found the suspect dead outside the campus, stated that he was not connected to the university and that the motive for the shooting is unknown. Authorities believe that the suspect acted alone.

"We are relieved to no longer have an active threat on campus, while we realize that there is so much healing that will need to take place after this," said MSU Police Interim Deputy Chief Chris Rozman.

At 8:18 p.m. ET, shots were fired inside Berkey Hall, which houses the College of Social Science, resulting in the deaths of two people. Shortly after, another shooting was reported at the nearby MSU student union, which is frequently visited by students, and one person died there. The police confirmed that both buildings are accessible to the public during business hours.

According to Rozman, hundreds of officers from various agencies rushed to the scene. The victims were taken to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing and were reported to be in critical condition. However, there is currently no additional information available about them.

At least three people have been killed after a gunman opened fire at Michigan State University, police say.

Michigan State Police released a photo of a suspect in two shootings on campus Mon, Feb. 13

At 10:15 p.m. ET, the police confirmed that Berkey Hall and other nearby buildings had been secured, and the shelter-in-place order was lifted early Tuesday morning. Earlier in the evening, the authorities advised parents not to come to the campus.

Rozman expressed sympathy, saying, "We understand the emotions involved for parents at this time. It will aid our response and help us identify the shooter with fewer people on campus."

The university has canceled all activities on campus, including in-person and virtual classes, as well as sporting events, for at least 48 hours. Students and employees can access counseling services provided by the school.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, an independent data collection organization, Monday's shooting is the latest mass shooting in the United States, which has already resulted in dozens of deaths in 2023. The group defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people, excluding the shooter, are shot or killed. In 2022, the organization recorded almost 650 mass shootings in the country.

Teresa Woodruff, MSU's interim president, said early Tuesday that support will be provided for university students, faculty, and staff. "We're devastated with the loss of life and we want to wrap our arms around every family touched by this tragedy," she said.

On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked into Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Over the course of minutes, they would kill 12 students and a teacher and wound 24 others before taking their own lives.

For the last 16 years, Sue Klebold, Dylan's mother, has lived with the indescribable grief and shame of that day. How could her child, the promising young man she had loved and raised, be responsible for such horror? And how, as his mother, had she not known something was wrong? Were there subtle signs she had missed? What, if anything, could she have done differently?

Filled with hard-won wisdom and compassion, A Mother's Reckoning is a powerful and haunting book that sheds light on one of the most pressing issues of our time.
