In 1987, during a family bushwalking trip in Victoria's Wilson's Promontory National Park, a 9-year-old Australian boy, Patrick "Paddy" Hildebrand, went missing.

Despite thorough searches conducted by authorities and volunteers, Paddy was never found, and his disappearance continues to be one of Australia's most perplexing unsolved mysteries.

In June, the Hildebrand family, comprising of mother Christine, Paddy's older brother Joe (who is now a renowned journalist), and some of Paddy's cousins, embarked on a bushwalking trip. They intended to hike along the famous Lilly Pilly Gully track, situated in the Wilsons Promontory National Park.

The track is just a small part that makes up the approximately 50,500 hectares (about 124,500 acres) National Park. The trail is known for its lush rainforest and diverse plant life, including the Lilly Pilly tree, which is where the track gets its name.

The Telegraph Saddle carpark is the starting point of the approximately 4 km-long Lilly Pilly Gully track, which presents a moderate level of difficulty. The trail runs through the stunning rainforest of the national park and is well-maintained, with clear markings. As a result, it is a secure hike that caters to visitors of all ages and fitness levels.

As per his brother Joe's book titled "An Average Joe - My Horribly Abnormal Life," published in 2013, Paddy was a lively and daring boy who relished bushwalking.

During their hike through the verdant yet thick bushland, Paddy, being his curious self, walked ahead to explore the area, and after about ten minutes, disappeared from view around a bend. When his family called out to him, there was no response, and an immediate search of the surrounding area failed to yield any trace of him. That was the last time they ever saw him.

Christine, Paddy's mother, gathered the children together after an unsuccessful search and called out for her son. They retraced their steps back to the car, but upon arriving, they realized that Paddy was not with them. Subsequently, the family headed to the nearest ranger station to report his disappearance, which may have been a fatal error.

The search for Paddy intensified rapidly, with police and hundreds of volunteers joining in the effort. The searchers were lifted in and out of helicopters, and after five days of searching, the entire region had been trampled upon, having been combed over by people for days, repeatedly. One skilled searcher remarked on the extensive human activity in the area.

On the day of Paddy's disappearance, there were numerous searchers, including local volunteers, the State Emergency Service (SES), police, and later, even Aboriginal trackers. The search efforts began on the day of Paddy's disappearance but were hampered by inclement weather and the onset of darkness.

The search resumed in the following days and weeks, but despite the exhaustive effort, no trace of Paddy was discovered. The only lead was a bed of ferns and Paddy's yellow hat.

According to Joe, Paddy, despite his liveliness, was physically challenged and experienced epilepsy. Furthermore, some believe that he was never diagnosed with autism, which might have contributed to his disappearance.
"I never knew anything different…Once he pointed at the television when it was just on static and said that was what it was like inside his head."

As time progressed, the search for Paddy gradually lost steam, and the case went cold, leaving the Hildebrand family with no closure and a lifetime of heartbreak. Despite the considerable media attention, thorough investigations, and massive search efforts, the sole item found was the young boy's yellow, plastic rain hat, which only added to the eerie mystery of his disappearance.

Despite years passing since his brother's disappearance, Paddy's older brother Joe has never been able to shake off the mystery of what happened to his younger sibling. As a journalist, he has spent countless hours seeking answers, yet no new information has come to light.

While the official explanation is that Paddy became lost and perished in the wilderness, nobody has ever been discovered, leaving the family and authorities with more questions than answers. Even to this day, the disappearance of Paddy Hildebrand remains one of Australia's most puzzling unsolved mysteries.
