"Yes, I was living in sin. But did I commit any crimes? No," Heidi Carter told an Indiana court before she was sentenced to 65 years for aiding her lover in the murder of Tim Ivy and the rape of a female victim.

Last Friday, a woman from Indiana was given a 65-year prison sentence for allegedly aiding and abetting her boyfriend in binding, torturing, and ultimately killing a man and repeatedly sexually assaulting a woman they had brought home for a threesome.

Law & Crime reviewed court documents stating that Heidi Kathleen Carter, a 37-year-old resident of Evansville, was convicted last month of murder, three counts of criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon, and two counts of aiding or causing forcible rape.

Despite allegations that Carter's partner, Carrey Hammond, was responsible for the murder of 50-year-old Tim Ivy and the sexual assault of the female victim, he did not face trial. On October 19, 2021, police were called to the couple's Evansville residence by a hired cleaner who found the bound woman and Ivy's body.

When Hammond approached officers outside the home in an aggressive manner while clutching what they believed to be a gun (later revealed to be a selfie stick), they fatally shot him.
During her sentencing hearing, Carter spoke to the court and maintained that she, too, was a victim.

"Yes, I was living in sin. But did I commit any crimes? No," she said, according to the local outlet. "Under the circumstances, I did the best that I could. I'm a victim, too."

However, when Vanderburgh County Circuit Court Judge David Kiely issued her sentence, he criticized Carter's statement and observed that she displayed a "disregard for the value of human life."
According to a local news outlet, Carter plans to appeal her conviction within the next 30 days. Judge Kiely acknowledged her financial situation and stated that the court would appoint her an attorney. He also mentioned that the 505 days that Carter spent in jail before her trial would be counted as time served toward her sentence.

Following the hearing, Stan Levco from the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor's Office reportedly spoke to the Courier & Press, describing the case as "one of the most sadistic — if not the most sadistic" he had ever handled.

On October 19, 2021, court documents reveal that Carter connected with Tim Ivy and his girlfriend through an LGBTQ dating app. The trio consumed alcohol and drugs before engaging in a threesome.

According to court documents, Hammond became angry when he discovered the group's activities. The female victim reported to police that he then took hold of a baseball bat and proceeded to assault Ivy. Hammond subsequently restrained both victims using duct tape.

“The next thing I know there’s a man bursting through the door with a baseball bat attacking us,” she testified in court, according to earlier reporting by the Evansville Courier & Press.

According to the affidavit, Hammond subjected the couple to hours of torture and beatings. Carter is alleged to have brandished a gun and repeatedly threatened to kill them, while also urging Hammond to do as he wished with the victims.

However, Carter reportedly claimed to police that she merely pretended to assist Hammond and pointed the gun at the victims to placate him and protect herself from harm.

While Carter was absent from the residence, the female victim testified that Hammond strangled Ivy to death with a belt after he tried to escape from his restraints.

Police reported that after the murder, Carter ordered pizza and invited a woman over to help clean the scene before a "landlord inspection." This witness told authorities that she saw blood on Carter's boots and helped clean two rooms before discovering the captive woman and Ivy's body, which had been concealed in a pile of laundry.

Prior to Carter's sentencing on Friday, Ivy's daughter, mother, and ex-wife provided victim impact statements to Judge Kiely, as per Law & Crime.

“The only man to truly understand me is gone, and it feels like most of me went with him,” Ivy’s 24-year-old daughter wrote. ”I will never understand or recover from this.”

“My children no longer have their father,” wrote Ivy's ex-wife, Jamie Combs, according to the Courier & Press. “The only recourse left for Tim and our family is justice.”

According to reports, Ivy's mother, Debbie Fink, wrote that she believes Carter deserves to spend the remainder of her life in prison. Following Thursday's verdict, she informed the Courier & Press that her family "might finally be able to get some peace."
