Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh closed in rape inquiry

Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh have been closed by police investigating the reported rape of a 20-year-old woman.

Police Scotland said officers were called to the incident in the city center at about 03:45 on Monday.

The historic gardens, which are overlooked by Edinburgh Castle, are usually locked at night. The public was prohibited from accessing the area on Monday morning, as the paths were cordoned off. A police tent was also set up on a pathway as a part of the ongoing investigation.

On Monday, May 1 at approximately 3:45 am, a 20-year-old woman reportedly suffered an assault in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh.

Following an alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman in the early hours of Monday, May 1, police have closed off a popular tourist spot in Edinburgh. Princes Street Gardens was the site of the attack, and authorities are currently conducting an investigation. A sizeable area around the location has been cordoned off, as evidenced by the presence of blue forensic tape and images from the scene.

 

A statement from the force said: “Around 3.45am on Monday, 1, May, we received a report of the serious sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman in the Princes Street Gardens area of Edinburgh.

“Enquiries are at an early stage and ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

 

Edinburgh City Council has verified that the gardens are still closed to the public.
 

A Twitter post by the Edinburgh City Council has confirmed that the public is not allowed to enter Princes Street Gardens, including its toilets, due to an ongoing police incident.
