Despite facing disbelief, Luzaida Cuevas persisted in her assertion that her 10-day-old daughter had been abducted. To her astonishment, her claims were validated when she encountered her supposedly deceased child at a birthday party.

In the chilly evening of December 1997, Luzaida Cuevas, a 31-year-old mother of three, ventured out in search of employment while her boyfriend, Pedro Vera, visited his relatives. Meanwhile, their two young sons and their precious 10-day-old daughter, Delimar Vera, were under the care of Pedro's mother.

Arriving at her Philadelphia home just after 5 pm, Luzaida was greeted by a horrifying sight—the second floor consumed by flames. Miraculously, everyone had managed to escape the inferno except for her 10-day-old baby girl, Delimar. Overwhelmed with panic, Luzaida rushed inside, desperately hoping to find her daughter. A shiver ran down her spine as she discovered the crib empty, intensifying her anguish.

Despite Luzaida's persistent efforts to inform the firefighters about her missing newborn baby, her desperate pleas went unheard. Instead, they directed her to a hospital where she received treatment for burns on her face. According to a subsequent report, it was determined that Delimar had tragically succumbed to an accidental fire caused by a homemade extension cord.

Despite exhaustive searches and investigations, the remains of baby Delimar were never located.

Although authorities swiftly closed the case, Luzaida firmly believed that her daughter had been abducted. Her conviction stemmed from the absence of a body, the inexplicably empty crib mere moments after the fire broke out, and the wide-open window in the bedroom where Delimar had been peacefully sleeping, despite the freezing cold temperatures outside.

Throughout the years, Luzaida persistently shared her account with anyone willing to lend an ear. Unfortunately, most dismissed her as delusional, and the authorities showed little interest in pursuing her claims. Despite her fervent pleas, an investigation was consistently denied. Even Pedro Vera, her partner at the time, urged her to let go and move forward. They eventually had a third son together before parting ways for good in 2000.

In January 2003, Luzaida received an invitation to a child's birthday party organized by Pedro Vera's sister. To her surprise, Carolyn Correa, Pedro's 41-year-old cousin by marriage, was also in attendance. Luzaida couldn't help but notice the remarkable resemblance between Carolyn's 6-year-old daughter, Aaliyah Hernandez, and herself. Not only did the little girl share Luzaida's features and dimples, but she also bore a striking resemblance to Luzaida's other children.

Luzaida beckoned Aaliyah to approach her, claiming that there was gum tangled in the young girl's hair. Skillfully, she plucked a few strands, swiftly concealing them within a napkin.

Following the incident, Luzaida approached the authorities with her suspicions that Aaliyah might be her long-lost daughter, Delimar. However, they dismissed her claims as far-fetched. Undeterred, Luzaida sought assistance from State Representative Angel Cruz, who recognized the strength of a mother's intuition. With his support, investigators were eventually persuaded to conduct a DNA test to determine the truth.

The outcome was astonishing: the DNA test confirmed that 6-year-old Aaliyah Hernandez was indeed Delimar Vera. As a result, Carolyn was apprehended, and a subsequent DNA test provided conclusive evidence that she was not the biological mother of the child. Carolyn was subsequently arrested and faced charges of kidnapping.

Luzaida and Delimar experienced a heartwarming reunion, and when Luzaida asked her daughter, "Do you know who I am?" the 6-year-old replied, "You are my mother." Within a month, Delimar joyfully joined Luzaida and her three newfound brothers in a harmonious family setting. Over time, Pedro also obtained shared custody, ensuring that Delimar could be part of both parents' lives.

Years later, Delimar would reflect on her journey and express her deep contentment at rediscovering her real mother. She would speak fondly of her fulfilling life, enriched by the presence of her kind-hearted siblings who embraced her as their own.

During the investigation, it was discovered that Carolyn had visited Luzaida on the day of the kidnapping, appearing to be pregnant. Strangely, she returned later that evening, asserting that she had left her purse behind. Carolyn went upstairs to use the bathroom on the second floor, just moments before the fire erupted. It was eventually determined that Carolyn had intentionally started the fire as a means to conceal the abduction.

Disturbingly, it came to light that Carolyn had previously set a clinic ablaze in 1995 after being terminated for fraudulent activities.

Following the incident, Carolyn contacted her boyfriend, Andre Moore, that same night, informing him that she had given birth at their residence. They named the baby Aaliyah, paying homage to the renowned singer. However, as time passed, Andre grew skeptical and demanded a paternity test, which revealed that he was not the biological father.

Their relationship subsequently ended, but Carolyn continued to raise Delimar as her own daughter in her Philadelphia home, which happened to be a mere 3 miles away from Luzaida's residence.

Despite the conclusive DNA test results, Carolyn stubbornly maintained that Delimar was her biological child, Aaliyah. However, her story faced a significant obstacle: Carolyn had undergone a tubal ligation in 1990, making it medically impossible for her to conceive a child.

Subsequently, Carolyn made a surprising assertion, stating that she had engaged in an affair with Pedro and that he had given her Delimar after she experienced a stillborn birth. However, the absence of any medical records substantiating Carolyn's pregnancy or childbirth cast doubt on her claims. Pedro vehemently denied the allegations, and investigators ultimately concluded that he had no involvement in the kidnapping case.

Based on the findings of a forensic psychologist, it was determined that Carolyn had been afflicted by pseudocyesis, a condition wherein a woman erroneously believes she is pregnant. The psychologist concluded that Carolyn genuinely believed Delimar was her own child. Nevertheless, the judge ruled that Carolyn's actions stemmed from manipulation rather than true delusion. Consequently, she was sentenced to 9 to 30 years in prison.

According to Carolyn Correa, she believed, "I saved her and she saved me. I think if someone else had her, they might have treated her poorly. She saved me because I had lost my own child."
