Krista was filled with horror as she observed Jeffrey's body, blood gushing out uncontrollably. He showed no signs of consciousness or responsiveness. Adding to the dreadful scene, his ten-year-old son clutched a revolver tightly in his hand.

“I shot Dad.” He said.

Krista: My son shot my husband. I need an ambulance. He’s bleeding!…

Operator: How old is your son?

Krista: Ten! Oh, God

Jeffrey Russell Hall, a resident of Riverside, California, was a 32-year-old skilled plumber in the local area. He had previously been married to Leticia Neal, but they eventually divorced. During their marriage, they were blessed with two children named Joseph and Shirley Hall. Following the divorce, custody of the two children was awarded to Leticia.

Following her divorce from Jeffrey, Leticia swiftly embarked on a new chapter in her life, and found love with another man.

They were blessed with twins, but the joy was overshadowed by the twins' delayed growth and development. Worried about their well-being, the twins were promptly admitted to the hospital for thorough evaluation and necessary medical attention.

In a distressing turn of events, Child Protective Services intervened when it came to light that Leticia had been raising her children in a home devoid of essential utilities such as heat and gas. The living conditions were dire, with maggots infesting the surroundings, and the children were consistently kept in a state of filth.

Tragically, Joseph and Shirley appeared neglected, malnourished and bore visible signs of injuries. Consequently, the decision was made to remove Joseph and Shirley from their mother's care in order to ensure their safety and well-being.

After successfully regaining custody of his two children, Jeffrey encountered a series of challenging financial setbacks that made it increasingly difficult for him to support his family. Despite his relentless efforts, he struggled to secure stable employment.

Frustrated and desperate, Jeffrey became entangled with the National Socialist Movement (NSM), commonly known as the Nazi Party, assuming a leadership role within the organization. In this new extremist ideology, he held the misguided belief that his job and financial woes were a direct consequence of Jewish individuals and non-whites allegedly dominating the workforce.

Jeffrey regularly hosted member meetings at his home, where his children were present. Unfortunately, these gatherings were characterized by the proliferation of anti-non-white slogans and hate speech. Consequently, Joseph regularly bore witness to his father's discriminatory behavior.

Furthermore, Jeffrey vented his frustrations on his family, subjecting them to the consequences of his emotional turmoil.

Jeffrey's behavior escalated to the point where he turned violent toward his new wife, Krista McCary. Additionally, he subjected Joseph to punishment for trivial reasons such as being too loud, resulting in several instances of physical abuse where he repeatedly hit and kicked the young boy in the back.

As a consequence of this abusive environment, Joseph developed aggressive tendencies and engaged in verbal abuse from a very early age. This behavior manifested in his interactions with others, leading to his expulsion from six different schools due to misconduct.

Joseph's troubled behavior extended to extreme acts of aggression, including one incident where he stabbed a teacher with a pencil. Additionally, he attempted to strangle another teacher using a telephone cord.

Compounding his already challenging circumstances, Joseph's situation was worsened by his exposure to drugs and alcohol even before he was born. Leticia, his mother, consumed substances such as heroin, methamphetamine, LSD, marijuana, and alcohol during her pregnancy with Joseph.

At the young age of ten, Jeffrey initiated Joseph into the usage of firearms, proudly sharing his parental approach with his NSM group.

However, the consequences of Jeffrey's misguided teaching methods soon turned against him. Several days later, following Jeffrey's return home in an inebriated state from his NSM meeting on May 1st, 2011, he collapsed onto the couch, succumbing to his drowsiness.

Seizing the opportunity, Joseph obtained a revolver from his father's bedroom and proceeded to shoot Jeffrey in the head while he slept, shocking both himself and others present.

The sound of the gunshot startled Krista awake, leaving her in a state of astonishment and disbelief. Upon hearing the gunshot, Krista rushed to the scene to find Jeffrey unconscious and bleeding heavily.

"I shot Dad," Joseph said. Krista quickly called the police.

Investigation

During their investigation, it came to light that Child Protective Services had filed 23 reports in the past, alleging abuse, neglect, and unsatisfactory living conditions at the Hall household. Upon inspecting the residence, the police discovered dirty clothes scattered around and empty beer bottles left unattended.

The bathroom emitted a strong odor of urine, and the pillows, mattresses, and blankets were visibly unclean. Furthermore, the presence of hazardous weapons, guns, and easily accessible ammunition raised concerns regarding the safety of the children in the household.

The authorities uncovered that Jeffrey would occasionally bring Joseph to the Mexican border, where heavily armed members of the Neo-Nazi group would frequently patrol in an attempt to apprehend undocumented immigrants.

It was at this location that Jeffrey instructed his son in the use of firearms, providing him with shooting lessons. Joseph was apprehended by the authorities and transported to a juvenile detention center.

Subsequently, Krista was arrested and faced charges related to the improper storage of firearms as well as child neglect. Temporary custody of Joseph's siblings was granted to Jeffrey's mother. Given Joseph's young age at the time of the murder, his trial sparked controversy, leading to a debate about his understanding of the gravity of his actions.

What is Murder Motive?

Numerous theories emerged surrounding the motives behind Joseph's act of killing Jeffrey. One theory suggested that Jeffrey's threat to burn down the family home while they slept, after removing the smoke detectors, played a role in Joseph's decision to kill his father.

Many individuals expressed sympathy for Joseph, while others speculated that Jeffrey's leadership in the Neo-Nazi movement made his murder significant, turning Joseph into a hero figure for some. However, it was later revealed that Jeffrey's Nazism was unrelated to the case, and prosecutors believed that Joseph would have shot his father regardless of his affiliations, even if he had been a member of a different political party.

Initially, Joseph himself claimed to have been inspired by an episode of the TV series Criminal Minds, where a boy shoots his abusive father without facing consequences.

Joseph shot his father as a way to teach him a lesson, to make him understand the pain he inflicted upon him through repeated physical abuse. He believed that his father would survive the incident, not anticipating that it would be fatal.

In 2013, Joseph was found guilty of second-degree murder for killing his father. Because he was underage, he was sentenced to juvenile detention and will be released when he turns 23 years old.

As a result of Joseph's case, California lawmakers introduced a new bill to safeguard children by granting them additional protection during police interrogations.
