Teghan Skiba, born in 2006, entered the world as the child of Helen Reyes and Jerry Skiba. Unfortunately, shortly after her birth, Jerry Skiba was incarcerated due to drug-related charges, resulting in Teghan being separated from her father. Consequently, she was solely raised by her mother until the age of four.

In January 2010, Teghan found herself entrusted to the care of Jonathan Douglas Richardson, aged 25, her mother's boyfriend. This arrangement was made while her mother was away for army reserve training. Unfortunately, this seemingly ill-considered decision took a devastating turn in July 2010.

During this time, Richardson took Teghan to a barn located behind his grandparents' house, where they resided. Tragically, over a period of ten days, he subjected Teghan to unimaginable torment in response to allegations of bedwetting and soiling. The abuse included physical torture and repeated instances of sexual assault, resulting in Teghan losing consciousness.

In July 2010, Teghan Skiba tragically passed away at a hospital in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, as a result of severe blunt force trauma to her head. On July 16, 2010, Jonathan Douglas Richardson brought the young girl to Johnston Medical Center, claiming that she had fallen off her bed. However, medical professionals discovered alarming evidence of far more severe injuries. Teghan's body was covered in bruises and bite marks, indicating the presence of extensive trauma beyond what could be explained by a simple fall.

Given the severity of her injuries, Teghan was promptly transferred to the University of North Carolina hospital to receive appropriate medical attention. Despite the diligent efforts of the doctors and nurses caring for her, the extent of the child's injuries proved to be overwhelming, and tragically, she succumbed to them a few days later.

INVESTIGATION

Following the discovery of Teghan's injuries, the hospital staff promptly alerted the authorities, leading to the arrest and subsequent detention of Richardson pending trial. Despite facing questioning, Richardson maintained his claim that the injuries were a result of the child repeatedly jumping off furniture. However, during the trial, Dr. Jonathan Privette, an assistant chief medical examiner from Greenville, presented crucial evidence.

Dr. Privette testified that he observed neck injuries on Teghan that were consistent with marks caused by a power cord. In a grim revelation, the doctor informed the court, "When she arrived at the hospital, her brain had suffered such severe damage and swelling that brain matter was beginning to protrude."

Teghan, the young child, suffered from a multitude of injuries, revealing the horrific extent of her abuse. These injuries encompassed 66 bite marks, bruises, whip marks, and lesions across her body.

Disturbingly, the forensic analysis uncovered Teghan's blood DNA on a wooden rod, while over 30 items, including underwear, pants, a sleeping bag, and a pillowcase, exhibited traces of her blood. Furthermore, a dentist provided testimony in court, affirming that the bite marks found on Teghan's body were consistent with the dental impressions of Richardson. Some of these bites were so severe that they resulted in torn flesh, further emphasizing the brutality inflicted upon the young victim.

In the courtroom in Smithfield, the jurors were deeply affected by the harrowing evidence presented to them, particularly when they were shown autopsy photos. The distressing nature of these pictures was so overwhelming that even Teghan's grandparents couldn't contain their emotions and broke down in tears.

Police Deputy Matt DeSilva, overcome with grief, openly wept as he testified, describing Teghan's injuries as "the most horrifying thing I've ever seen inflicted upon a human being, especially a defenseless child." The profound impact of Teghan's suffering resonated throughout the courtroom, leaving a lasting impression on everyone present.

Richardson's defense lawyer claimed that he had mental health problems and had experienced childhood abuse himself. The lawyer argued that despite Richardson's behavior during the trial, he did not commit sexual abuse against the child. The defense attorney described the death of the four-year-old as a profoundly tragic event that Richardson did not intentionally cause.

Jonathan Douglas Richardson, the boyfriend of the child's mother for six months, received a death sentence for his involvement in the child's horrific death. He was convicted of kidnapping, sexual offense, and other charges. Richardson is currently awaiting execution on death row.

Teghan's mother, Helen Reyes, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison. She was found guilty of a serious crime: felony negligent child abuse that caused severe harm to her daughter and resulted in Teghan's tragic death.
