Jesse Lewis, born on June 30, 2006, in Danbury, Connecticut, faced an unimaginable tragedy at the tender age of 6 when he lost his life in the devastating Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting. Despite his young years, Jesse displayed extraordinary courage during the attack.
With immense bravery, he encouraged his fellow classmates to flee as the shooter paused to reload his weapon, ultimately sacrificing his own life to ensure their safety. Jesse's selfless act transformed him into a hero, forever remembered for his unwavering bravery and the lives he saved.
On an ordinary school day, young Jesse Lewis awoke with anticipation, preparing himself for another day of learning and joy. With the morning sun shining, he savored his cherished breakfast – a delectable sandwich comprised of sausage, egg, and cheese, accompanied by a comforting cup of hot chocolate obtained from a nearby deli. Little did he know that this seemingly routine start to his Friday morning would tragically be his last.

As the students settled into their seats, their teacher, Ms. Soto, began imparting the day's lessons. Unbeknownst to them, a horrifying event was about to unfold. Suddenly, Adam Lanza, a 20-year-old individual, unleashed a barrage of gunfire from the entrance of the school, armed with an assault rifle. The chaos ensued, and the unsuspecting victims were thrust into a nightmarish reality.

Eyewitness accounts paint a harrowing picture, revealing the haunting silence that enveloped the premises until Lanza reached the adjacent classroom, where Ms. Rousseau's class was held. There, tragically, almost all the children met a devastating fate, with one lone survivor hiding beneath the lifeless bodies of their classmates.

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Lanza entered Jesse's classroom, ruthlessly taking the life of Ms. Soto as she valiantly tried to divert his attention away from the students' hiding place. In that perilous moment, Jesse's extraordinary courage shone through.

Recognizing an opportunity amidst the chaos, he fearlessly called out to his classmates, who were huddled together, holding hands tightly. With his selfless warning, six children managed to escape the confines of the classroom, seeking refuge in a place of safety. Jesse's decisive actions would forever mark him as a beacon of bravery amidst unimaginable darkness.

The victims

After the tragic incident, investigators later approached Scarlett Lewis, Jesse's mother, to provide her with the details of what transpired inside the classroom. In the midst of grappling with unimaginable grief, Scarlett recounted the final moments of her beloved son. She painfully remembered Jesse's courageous act, as he shouted, "Run!" while Adam Lanza reloaded his weapon, only to be met with a fatal shot to the head. Among the students in Miss Soto's class, 11 children managed to survive the horrific ordeal, while five other first-graders sought refuge in a closet.

The date was December 14, 2012, a day forever etched in history. At the age of 20, Lanza forcibly entered the school premises and perpetrated one of the most devastating school massacres in American history. His ruthless actions claimed the lives of 20 innocent first-grade children and six dedicated staff members, leaving behind a legacy of immense tragedy and heartbreak.

On that same day, before the school shooting, Lanza tragically ended his own mother's life. When law enforcement arrived at the school, he took his own life inside the building.

Despite the heartbreaking aftermath, Jesse's remarkable bravery and quick thinking as a six-year-old will always be remembered. He fearlessly tried to protect and guide other children to safety. Upon hearing the gunshots, he ran into the hallway to offer assistance. In our hearts, we already knew this was the kind of person he was - fearless, courageous, and strong.

" his family said in his wake. "We take comfort in knowing what a brave child he was. His actions were consistent with the way he lived his life; passionately embracing everything, a perfect combination of courage and faith, like a little toy soldier, his favorite toy."

Scarlett Lewis, Jesse's mother, is dedicated to the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Foundation, a charity that promotes love, gratitude, forgiveness, and compassion within communities. The foundation was inspired by a message written by Jesse on their kitchen chalkboard, which emphasized "nurturing," "healing," and "love." Scarlett is committed to spreading these positive values to make a difference in the world.
