Teacher Killed, Several People Wounded in Knife Attack at French School

A teacher was killed Friday and several people wounded in a knife attack at a school in northern France, according to multiple news reports citing authorities.

The stabbing happened around 11 a.m. at Gambetta High School in Arras, a city located about 115 miles north of Paris, police said, per The New York Times, CNN and BBC News.

Police said the victim killed was a French language teacher, according to BBC News. A second teacher and a security guard were reportedly wounded. They have not been identified by police.

Gérald Darmanin, the French interior minister, said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) Friday morning that police have arrested the suspect.

According to CNN affiliate BFMTV and BBC News, police described the suspect as a man in his 20s of Chechen origin who shouted "Allahu Akbar," or "God is greatest", during the attack. His brother was also reportedly taken into police custody.
