Millions of children grew up knowing her voice. Almost none of them knew her story.
Judith Eva Barsi, born June 6, 1978, voiced Ducky in "The Land Before Time" and Anne-Marie in "All Dogs Go to Heaven" — two beloved roles she never lived to see released. She was murdered by her father in 1988, at age 10.
A Fast-Rising Career
Judith was discovered at a skating rink at age five and quickly became a working child actor, appearing in more than 70 commercials and roles across television and film, including 1987's "Jaws: The Revenge." Because she was notably small for her age, she was frequently cast as younger characters, and by fourth grade was earning an estimated $100,000 a year, enough for her family to buy a house in West Hills, Los Angeles.
Life at Home
As Judith's career grew, her father, József Barsi, an alcoholic, became increasingly volatile, repeatedly threatening his wife Maria and daughter and being arrested three times for drunk driving. In December 1986, Maria reported his threats and physical aggression to authorities, but declined to press charges when police found no visible injuries.
The abuse continued. Judith told a friend her father had thrown pots and pans at her, causing a nosebleed, and she began showing signs of severe distress — pulling out her own hair and eyelashes and plucking her cat's whiskers. In May 1988, after breaking down during an audition, Judith was taken by her mother to a child psychologist, who identified serious physical and emotional abuse and reported it to child protective services.
A Warning Not Acted On
The investigation was closed after Maria told the caseworker she intended to divorce József and had already rented a separate apartment as a safe daytime space for herself and Judith. Friends urged her to follow through, but she hadn't yet made the move by the time it was too late.
What Happened
Judith was last seen riding her bike on the morning of July 25, 1988. That evening, József shot her once while she slept, then shot Maria in the hallway as she ran toward the sound. He remained in the house with their bodies for two days before pouring gasoline over them and setting them on fire, then killing himself in the garage.
After Her Death
Judith and her mother were buried together at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles. Her gravestone reads, "Our Concrete Angel, Yep, Yep, YEP!" — a reference to a signature line from Ducky, the character she voiced. Both "The Land Before Time" and "All Dogs Go to Heaven" were released after her death; the latter's end-credits song, "Love Survives," was dedicated to her memory.
A Case Still Cited Today
Judith's case has remained a frequently cited example in discussions of how child protective systems handle emotional and psychological abuse claims that don't leave visible physical marks — and how difficult it can be for outside intervention to reach a child in time, even when multiple warning signs are reported.
