Who Was Ariel Castro
Ariel Castro was a Cleveland school bus driver who lost his job in the early 2000s after a series of incidents involving poor judgment on the road. Life in Captivity

Castro largely kept the true nature of the household hidden from his own family and neighbors, at times padlocking parts of the house. The Escape
On May 6, 2013, Castro left the house without securing the exterior screen door. Amanda Berry got the attention of neighbors Angel Cordero and Charles Ramsey, who helped her out of the house with her daughter. Berry called 911, telling dispatchers she had been missing for a decade and that two other women were still inside. Police recovered Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus shortly after.
Arrest, Trial, and Death
Castro was arrested the same day. He was ultimately charged with 977 counts, including kidnapping, rape, and aggravated murder related to forced miscarriages. As part of a plea deal, he pleaded guilty to 937 counts in exchange for avoiding the death penalty, and on August 1, 2013, was sentenced to life in prison without parole plus 1,000 years. At sentencing, Castro claimed the relationships had been consensual — a claim the court and his victims rejected. About a month into his sentence, Castro died by suicide in his prison cell.
