Minnesota dad uses moose antler to slaughter 77-year-old sex offender he claims was stalking daughter - before turning himself into police station 'covered in blood

A 27-year-old Minnesota man named Levi Axtell has confessed to killing 77-year-old Lawrence Scully, a convicted sex offender, using a moose antler and a shovel.

Axtell claims that Scully had been stalking his young daughter, prompting him to take matters into his own hands. Scully had been previously convicted of molesting a six-year-old girl in 1979. Axtell turned himself in at the sheriff's office, visibly distressed and covered in blood.

Hearing his 5-year-old daughter crying from behind a barn, a father ran and discovered the unthinkable: A man molesting her. The father pulled the man off his daughter and started pummeling him to death with his bare hands.

Levi Axtell, a resident of Cook County, Minnesota, had harbored suspicions about Lawrence Scully's habit of parking his vehicle in areas where children were often present.

According to court records, Levi Axtell filed an order of protection against Lawrence Scully in 2018, which was initially approved but later dismissed. Additionally, records indicate that Scully was admitted to a mental health institution in 2020 and subsequently released, with doctors prescribing his anti-psychotic medication.

As per a criminal complaint filed on Friday, Levi Axtell allegedly attacked Lawrence Scully inside his apartment using a shovel and continued to strike him repeatedly before ultimately killing him with a large moose antler. The complaint further suggests that Axtell may have also damaged Scully's vehicle at some point during the incident.

According to a criminal complaint, Levi Axtell is alleged to have entered Lawrence Scully's home at approximately 4:45 pm and attacked him with a shovel that he had found on the victim's deck, striking him between 15-20 times. Axtell reportedly later confessed to finishing the attack using a large moose antler.

The complaint further states that Axtell had known Scully for a significant period of time and believed him to have committed previous sexual offenses against children.

The defendant reportedly stated that he had witnessed Lawrence Scully parked in his vehicle at places where children were present and had concerns that Scully would commit further sexual offenses.

Around 5 pm on Wednesday, a Cook County sheriff's deputy arrived at the property and discovered Lawrence Scully in a state of significant head trauma, with blood surrounding his body. The deputy quickly determined that Scully was deceased.

Levi Axtell walked into the police station with blood on his clothing and his head in his hands, where he admitted to killing Lawrence Scully.

Following Scully's death, a medical examiner reportedly observed defensive wounds on his arms.

In addition, a neighbor dialed 911 to report the incident after witnessing a van arrive at Scully's home and damage a vehicle before fleeing to Axtell's residence.

The witness also reported hearing screams at the time of the incident. Lawrence Scully had been convicted of molesting a six-year-old girl in Minnesota when he was 33 years old. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to serve between zero and five years in State Prison at Bayport, Minnesota.

After his conviction, Lawrence Scully was incarcerated until December 31, 1981, when he filed a petition for post-conviction relief.

During the hearing, a document was presented stating that the state had not provided any evidence to suggest that Scully posed a risk to the public.

In 2014, Scully even ran as a candidate for mayor of Grand Marais, Minnesota. However, by 2018, Scully was once again facing accusations of sexual misconduct involving minors.

In 2018, Levi Axtell filed for an order of protection, claiming that Lawrence Scully had been stalking his child.

Axtell noted in the petition that Scully and his family were not acquainted, stating that Scully would wait for the child outside of daycare and attempt to engage her in conversation.

Axtell further alleged that Scully had frequently parked his van in the area, seemingly in a pattern of stalking children.

" I have seen him parked right next to the school. ... He is a convicted pedophile and his stalking and attempting to groom my daughter is completely inappropriate and needs to stop."

Initially, Judge Michael Cuzzo granted Levi Axtell's request for a temporary order of protection, which prohibited Lawrence Scully from going within six blocks of Axtell's home. However, a permanent order was later denied by the same judge, who ruled that the allegations against Scully had not been proven true.

Meanwhile, Axtell had one criminal record related to a felony property damage case. Cook County Sheriff Pat Eliasen noted that they had received prior allegations against Scully, but upon investigation, they did not find any evidence to substantiate them.

According to a woman who is believed to be Levi Axtell's sister, the family has received significant support from the local community. She stated that they are planning to establish an online fundraiser to aid with the case.

'I am overwhelmed by the amount of support I am seeing online right now in light of Wednesday's tragedy,' Katrina Axtell wrote on Facebook.

'When a community member is in crisis we often feel at a loss for how to support them. When words don't feel like enough, it can be easy to err on the side of silence out of a desire to respect the privacy of the family involved.

According to court records from Minnesota, Lawrence Scully was committed to a mental asylum in July 2020 but was released the following year. In June 2021, the court approved the use of antipsychotic drugs for Scully.
