According to Lawrence, she and her 15-year-old friend, Hope Rippey, along with 17-year-olds Laurie Tackett and Melinda Loveless, were heading to what Lawrence thought was a music concert.

During the journey, Tackett revealed their sinister plan: they intended to murder someone that night, specifically 12-year-old Shanda Sharer.

They arrived at Shanda's house at 12:30 a.m., and Lawrence and Rippey convinced Shanda to come with them by saying they were taking her to see her girlfriend, Amanda Heavrin. Meanwhile, Loveless hid under a blanket in the back seat of the car, holding a knife.

Throughout the night, the teenagers subjected Shanda to assault and torture. Eventually, Tackett moved Shanda's body to a nearby field and set it on fire.

After their horrifying acts, the group of girls went to a McDonald's restaurant to have breakfast.

The reason behind Shanda Sharer's murder was jealousy. Melinda Loveless was envious of Shanda's relationship with her ex-girlfriend, Amanda Heavrin. Loveless believed that Shanda was trying to steal Heavrin away from her, so she sought revenge and convinced the other teens to join her.

In terms of the legal consequences, Tackett, Loveless, and Rippey were sentenced to 60 years in prison, while Lawrence received a 20-year sentence. Lawrence was granted parole in 2000, Rippey was released in 2006, and Tackett and Loveless were freed in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
